Coyte Melvin Byers, 80, of Statesville, passed away Monday, May 12, 2014, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. He was born September 11, 1933, to the late Lee Roy and Mamie Drum Byers. Before his retirement, he was employed by Commscope in Catawba. He loved gardening and giving away what he grew to neighbors. He also enjoyed taking care of his yard and chasing those pesky dandelions. Besides his family, he had two other loves. One was playing the harmonica and the other was his little Nissan truck. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Lindsey Claire Byers, three brothers, Coleman, Johnny, and Frank Byers along with one sister, Mabel Ruth Byers. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Virginia Holdsclaw Byers, two daughters, Tammy Marlowe (Greg) and Jennifer VanHouten (Court); two sons, David Byers (Cindy) and Kevin Byers (Angela). He is also survived by six grandchildren, Emily, Lane, Jacob, Katie, Hailey, and Amberlyn and one great grandchild, Connor. He is further survived by two brothers, Ray Byers (Rachel) and James Byers along with one sister, Nellie Sharpe (Jim). Funeral services for Mr. Byers will be conducted 11:00 am Friday, May 16, 2014, in the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Naomi King officiating. The family will visit with friends from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Concord Methodist Church Cemetery in Catawba County.
