Catherine Tomlin

Catherine Summers Tomlin, 95, of Statesville, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Tomlin was born May 13, 1918 in Iredell County and was the daughter of the late William Thomas Summers and Nora Bertha Abernathy Summers. She was a graduate of Cool Springs School and was married to the late Notley D. Tomlin, Jr., who died December 13, 1995. Catherine was a long time employee of Stimpson Hosiery Mill, retiring after 40 plus years and she was a lifelong member of Fifth Creek Presbyterian Church. A faithful and well respected Pink Lady Volunteer at Iredell Memorial Hospital, Catherine tallied more than 7976 volunteer hours, having worked as a Cardiac Rehabilitation Receptionist and an Emergency Room Receptionist from December of 1993 until 2011. Catherine loved volunteering her time and cherished all the friends she made and people she helped during the years and hours she gave. She is survived by one sister, Betty Summers Brendle and husband, Jimmy; three nephews and three nieces, John Summers (Jenny) of Alpharetta, GA, Bill Brendle (Peggy) of Statesville, Brenda Current Swicegood (Gary) of Harmony, Kenneth Brendle (Arlene) of Statesville, Charlene "Gay" Current Shaver (Michael) of Statesville, and Nancy Summers Cook along with seven grand nieces and nephews and eight great grand nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William Charles Summers, John Preston "JP" Summers and two sisters, Mary Deal Summers and Marie Summers Current. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 6, 2013 at Fifth Creek Presbyterian Church with Rev. Steve Hannah officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends on Friday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the church. Active pallbearers will be Gary Swicegood, Mike Shaver, William Bailey, Jr., John Milholland, Jerry Knox, Frankie Steele and Keith Niblock. Catherine was a very special aunt to all her many nieces and nephews and will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank Shirley Shaver, her caregiver and friend since 2011 for the loving care and compassion given Catherine by her. Memorials may be made to Fifth Creek Presbyterian Church or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
