Carlton Denford Hewitt, 91, of Statesville, passed away on November 10, 2018. He was known to many as "Boose" since he was the youngest sibling of six boys in the Hewitt family. He was born March 17, 1927 in Rowan County to the late John Henry Hewitt, Sr. and Sarah Essie Witherspoon Hewitt. He graduated from Cleveland High School in 1947 and was a First Class Seaman in the US Navy during WWII. On November 15, 1952 he married Janet Holmes Hewitt, who survives.
Mr. Hewitt worked for AT&T (formerly Southern Bell/Bellsouth) for 38 years and retired in 1984. Upon his retirement he continued to work for a local private phone company. He was a faithful member of New Salem UMC since 1964 and he served in many capacities at the church such as teaching JR/SR high school Sunday school classes for 18 years, Board of Trustees, PPRC Committee, United Methodist Men, and volunteered for many church projects.
Mr. Hewitt was an active member since 1952 in the Masonic Lodge in Cleveland, NC where he served as Master in 1969. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite, 32nd Degree Mason in Winston Salem, NC; and a member of the Foothills Chapter of the Telephone Pioneers of America. His hobbies were gardening, attending camp meetings at Balls Creek, and drinking coffee at McDonald's weekdays with local retirees in the community and once a week with retired AT&T workers prior to his illness.
Proceeding him in death in addition to his parents were his daughter, Johanna Hewitt Hoover in 2007; brothers, J.H. Jr., Coyt, Joseph, Ray, and Grover Hewitt; and sisters, Irene H. Ballard, Annie H. Loflin, Frances H. McKinnis, and Nancy H. Matheson. Carlton was the sole survivor of the 10 children in the Hewitt Family.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years; four children, Johnny Carlton Hewitt (Katrina) of Statesville, Todd Alan Hewitt (Teresa) of Troutman, Janet Leigh Hewitt McLain (Mike) of Statesville, and Charles Ray Hewitt (Tammy) of Statesville.
Grandchildren, Dan Hoover, Nathan Hewitt, Preston McLain, and Madelyn McLain. Also, Morgan Frazier, William Brown, and Claire Brown; Sister-in-Laws, Lou Dagenhart, Frieda Holmes; and several nieces and nephews.
Services honoring his life will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at New Salem UMC, with Rev. Keith Franklin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5:30 until 7:30 pm at Nicholson Funeral Home. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Masonic Lodge and Telephone Pioneers of America. Active pallbearers are grandsons, Dan Hoover, Nathan Hewitt, Preston McLain; William Brown; nephews, Bruce Hewitt, Sammy Dagenhart, Keith Holmes, Mark Holmes.
