Camille Lawrence died September 4 after a long battle with Alzheimers in her home at Piedmont Crossing in Thomasville, NC. She is survived by her daughter Carolyn (David Wilcox) Lawrence, son Thomas (Rhoda) Lawrence, son Joel (Joan) Lawrence, son Alan (Sarah) Lawrence, grandson Richard (Caley) Lawrence, granddaughter Elizabeth Lawrence, great grandson Joel Lawrence, sister Ruth Jackson, brother Vance (Carolyn) Turner, and sister Jacqueline Bates. She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years Richard Lawrence and her parents Frank and Huldah (Brinkley) Turner.Due to the pandemic, a private memorial will take place. She graduated from Broughton High School and while attending Meredith College met her future husband, Richard, when they both were members of a community orchestra.After marriage, she completed her undergraduate studies at East Tennessee State University, continued graduate work at Indiana State University, and then the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she received her Master of Fine Arts, all while raising four children, a menagerie of pets, and working as an art instructor at Davidson County Community College.In between family and work, Camille was involved in a range of activities from Girl Scout leader to field editor for an Appalachian Trail guidebook. Upon retirement she enjoyed managing the First Colony Inn in Nags Head with her family.She alsovolunteered as a Guardian ad Litemrepresenting the interests of foster children in court proceedings. A life-long liberal, Camille was a strong, independent, and sometimes fierce woman with boundless energy.She was an accomplished artist, an avid reader, loved classical music, travel, and all things outdoors including backpacking, hiking, camping, and bird watching. For many summers she was a fixture at High Rock Lake captaining her Thistle sailboat aptly named Hurricane. She was a mentor and friend to many.
