Brenda Smith

June 15, 1944 — October 2, 2013

Mrs. Brenda Haynes Smith, 69, of Statesville, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, as a result of an automobile accident. Mrs. Smith was born June 15, 1944 in Union Grove, NC and was the daughter of Coy Franklin Haynes and the late Ethel Sales Haynes. She was a graduate of East Wilkes High School class of '62 and she completed her School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina Dental Assistant Program in September 1962. On September 2, 1962, she married Thomas Lynn Smith, who survives. She was a member of Front Street Baptist Church where she and Lynn served their community and church with great enthusiasm. She was a member of Young at Heart at Front Street, a member of Mary Cannon Mission Group, and Jabez Sunday School Class. She volunteered her time with the Nominating Committee and the Greeting Committee. She was also a member of the Senior Adult Choir and the Worship Choir. She also worked with the American Red Cross blood drives and a volunteer with the nursery and the Vacation Bible School at Front Street. In addition to her mother, she was also preceded in death by her grandparents, Arthur and Bertha Sales and Spurgeon and Pearl Haynes. Her in-laws, Marvin Luther Smith and Bertha Louise Smith also preceded her in death. In addition to her father Coy Haynes and her husband of 51 years, Lynn Smith, she is survived by two daughters, Lisa Smith Cash and husband Mark and Amy Smith Gooden and husband Jonathan, both of Statesville; her brother, Dennis Haynes and wife Mary, two nieces, Kim Hull and husband Chris and Melissa Thompson and husband Chris, all of Clemmons. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Nancy Benfield and husband Boyd of Statesville, a nephew, Mike Benfield of Stony Point and a niece, Bonnie Killmeyer of Advance. She is further survived by four grandchildren, Alaina Danielle Cash, Nicholas Mark Cash, Konnor Bryce Gooden and Karrigan Olivia Gooden, all of Stateville and four great nieces and three great nephews. Brenda had amazing diction and editing abilities. She would have excelled at many professions. Her choice was working in the dental field, having served many capacities at the office of Dr. Guy Haddix during her 47 year tenure there. Her calm nature, beautiful smile and gift of loving to talk and share life joys with people relaxed the patients and set the atmosphere, allowing her spirit of genuine caring and listening to others to permeate their day. At Christmas and Easter she decorated the office using an opened Bible, displaying the scriptures relating to that season. All the patients knew her family through photos she proudly had on her desk. She loved deeply, and nurtured tirelessly, her family and friends. A new birth was one of her greatest joys. Her dear, widower, father lives several miles away, but that did not stop Brenda's constant contact and care of him. He and her mother are part of what made Brenda the person she was, and she took time every day to honor her parents, as instructed in the Bible. Much fun and excitement occurred for her grandchildren when they knew they would be spending time with Nana B. They knew she would have something fun planned, something that was special to their personality and enjoyment. She surprised everyone the day she went go-cart riding! Being around Brenda inspired in you a desire to excel, not by her words alone, but by her Godly example and sweet spirit that flowed from her. She spent a lot of time at her church and enjoyed being involved in many activities there, especially those promoting mission efforts. She loved mission work, a term that described the way she lived on a daily basis. Her mission was to help someone else and make their day more tolerable if they were in pain, or share their joy if life was happy for them. She could sense needs, and filled them quietly with no wish for recognition. She completed tasks by adding a well thought personal touch that others would never have considered, always surprising those around her with her forethought. If you know her daughters, then you know Brenda. They have developed into the same generous, Christian women that their mother patterned. At Christmas Brenda enjoyed unwrapping ornaments she had collected during her 51 year marriage and reminiscing about the time each ornament was purchased or given as a gift. She took the time to live fully the moments of life, not just the days. She and Lynn enjoyed life together and were a great compliment to each other. Brenda's life was lived in a consistent, dependable, loyal, loving, congruent, unselfish and caring presence. Her life was a witness for Christ, even if not a word was uttered. She did not let those around her remain physically or spiritually hungry. She felt like there was plenty. God would provide everything needed at the time it was needed. Her fountain was never half empty, but always half full with her compassionate, nurturing and sharing capacities evident. She loved serving her Lord, serving others, praying for others, singing praises, playing hymns on the piano and sharing her internal wealth. Her faith never faltered and our comfort in the loss of Brenda lies in knowing she now is singing in the Heavenly Choir with her mother, and others she loved so well.
