Bobbie Hurst Turner Rogers, 97, died peacefully on October 4, 2016 at Levine and Dickson Hospice House at Southminster. She was born in Statesville, North Carolina on October 17, 1918 and was the only child of the late Robert Hurst Turner and Lily Presnell Turner. Her father Lieutenant Robert Hurst Turner was killed in Belgium in World War I just prior to her birth. A graduate of Statesville High School and Mitchell Community College, she earned a degree in Secretarial Science from UNC at Greensboro. Bobbie and Wayne Hall Rogers were married in Statesville on December 26, 1940, the culmination of a love affair that spanned high school and college and ended with his death in 1978 after 37 years of marriage. Mrs. Rogers was employed by the City of Statesville for over thirty years, initially working in the Tax Department and finishing her career as the Executive Secretary for the City Manager. She was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church in Statesville since childhood and was an Associate Member of Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte. At Broad Street Methodist, she played the piano and taught Sunday School for the primary grades. She was active in the United Methodist Women and received the Special Mission Recognition Award. Bobbie was active in the Statesville community serving as a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, a member of the Fort Dobbs chapter of the DAR, past President of the American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Veteran's Council. In addition, she worked as a volunteer at Davis Community Hospital for more than twenty years. Bobbie began taking piano lessons at age five and continued through her years at Mitchell College. Her home was always filled with music ranging from classical to the Big Band Era. As recently as last Christmas, she played carols at the family Christmas Eve gathering. She found beauty all around her in flowers, trees, lakes and oceans and made others aware of the treasures of nature. She thoroughly enjoyed her many friends and was always "on go" for trips, long or short, near or far. In 2003, she left her beloved hometown of Statesville and moved to Charlotte to Southminster Retirement Community. There she made many close friends and enjoyed volunteering at the library and playing bridge. She rarely missed a Tuesday afternoon Chapel Service and did not close her eyes at night until she had read the Upper Room and completely worked the Charlotte Observer crossword puzzle. Bobbie loved fashion and possessed a knack for being well put together and accessorized. She was positive, pretty, faithful, pragmatic, smart, and organized. She was a fierce advocate and giver of unconditional love to her daughters, her grandchildren, family, and friends. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Rogers Dozier, and Robin Rogers Branstrom and her husband Bill, all of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Glenn Sherrill and his wife Lisa of Charlotte, Stuart Sherrill and his wife Cameron of Atlanta, and Robin Elizabeth Branstrom of Charlotte. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren, Luke and Celie Sherrill of Atlanta, and Jack and Will Sherrill of Charlotte.
