Betty Thomas Hawthorne

Betty Hawthorne, 102, of Statesville died Saturday, May 20, 2023.

She was born in Iredell County on Christmas Day, 1920, to the late William A. Thomas and Electa Foote Thomas. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James K. Hawthorne.

Betty attended Salem Academy for high school and was a graduate of Meredith College where she earned her bachelor's degree. She had been a member of the DAR, a member of Lydia Fellowship, loved reading, gardening, and had been very active in her church. She was a woman of great faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ. Betty practiced a life of disciplined prayer and was devoted to her family.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, John Thomas Hawthorne, and William Edward Hawthorne and his wife, Marcia Morris Hawthorne. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Jean Hawthorne Cormier and Husband, Trent, Katherine Grace Hawthorne, and Eleanor Lynn Hawthorne, along with five great-grandchildren, Jackson Edward Sutton, Maggie Grace Sutton, Willa Eleanor Sutton, Hudson Oak Cormier, and Hadley Jean Cormier.

A graveside service will be held Friday, May 26, 2023, at 11:00 am at Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meredith College, 3800 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC 27607.
