Barbara Jewel Horne

Barbara Henkel Horne, 90, of Statesville, passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at Iredell Memorial Hospital. She was born on September 13, 1927 in Douglas, Arizona to the late Frederick White Henkel and Margaret Leachet Henkel. Mrs. Horne was a graduate of Statesville Senior High School and was married to Robert B. Horne on July 26, 1946. They shared almost 63 years of marriage before his passing on July 30, 2009. She was employed by J.C. Penney Distribution Center for 40 years where she was Buyer and head of her department. Barbara was a charter member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and was Lay Person of the Year in 2012. She was leader in the church serving in the United Methodist Women, Doorstop Visitation Ministry, and Co-Chair of the Mission Committee. She was a member of the Wesley Adult Fellowship and the Bass-Beck Circle. Barbara was a faithful worker in the church kitchen and a mentor to many youth in the church. She was a cake decorator, seamstress, very artistic, and a homemaker extraordinaire. Along with her parents and husband, Robert, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances H. Orr and Shirley Leona Henkel. Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Cheri H. Seli (Rob) of Plains, Montana and Alison H. Lutz (Ron) of Valdese, NC; a niece, Kim Hernandez (Al) of Chapin, SC; grandchildren, Carole Scheer (Brandon) of Ocean Park, Wa., Connor Seli of Ft. Collins, Co., Kendall Seli of Denver, Co., Erin Omland (Greg) of Chapel Hill, NC, and Avery Lutz (Taylor Hube) of Durham, NC; great grandchildren, Micah, Jonah, and Levi Scheer and Savannah and Sydney Omland. She is further survived by a very close cousin, Laura Lou Byers; and very dear nieces and nephews. Funeral Services for Barbara will be held 2:00 pm Monday, October 30, 2017 at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Chris Fitzgerald and Rev. Gervase Hitch officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Sunday at Nicholson Funeral Home from 4:30 until 6:00 pm.
