Arlene Elizabeth Mitcham Shives, 82, of Statesville, passed away Thursday November 24, 2016 at Iredell Memorial Hospital. She was born in Iredell County on January 5, 1934 to the late Herman Webb Mitcham and Ina Mae Wilson Mitcham. Mrs. Shives was a graduate of Statesville High School and on September 7, 1977 married Grady Wilson Shives, who survives. They shared almost 40 years together before her passing. She had worked for 22 years for J.C. Penney Warehouse as an office clerk and later as Secretary for Shives Trucking Company. Mrs. Shives also did long distance driving and riding with her husband. She loved going out to eat, the beach, Nascar racing, working in her flowers, watching the hummingbirds, spending time with her great granddaughter, Ellie, and cared for her dog "Lucky." Mrs. Shives was a member of Diamond Hill Baptist Church where she had served as a children's Sunday school teacher and nursery worker for many years.. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Johnson and her stepmother, Edna Mitcham. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Grady; two daughters, Karen Anita Fox Hiott (Junior) of Olin and Debra Elizabeth Fox Nooe of Statesville; two grandsons, Matthew and Adam Hiott of Olin; a granddaughter, Megan Nooe Speaks (Corey) of Hamptonville; and a great granddaughter, Ellie Speaks. Funeral services will be held 2:30 pm Monday, November 28, 2016 at Diamond Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Holleman officiating. Burial will follow in the Union Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons and church members. The family will visit with friends at the church prior to the service from 1:30 until 2:30 pm. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 1355 Peachtree Street NE, Suite 600, Atlanta, GA 30309 or to a church or charity of the donor's choice.
