Amy Lackey Holland

Amy Lackey Holland died on Sunday, April 19 at The Pines at Davidson following a period of declining health. She has resided at The Pines since 2003. Services to celebrate the life of Amy will be held at Forest Park Presbyterian Church on Tuesday at 11 o'clock following a private interment at Iredell Memorial Gardens . The family will greet friends after the service at the church. She was born on October 28, 1921 in Alexander County. She was the youngest child of Ida Sharpe Lackey and Plummer Bolin Lackey. Amy graduated as Valedictorian from Troutman High School in 1937. She attended Mitchell College. Following college, she worked for Park's Realty and Statesville Flour Mills. On June 2, 1942, she married Willard Frank Holland. After Willard's return from service in the US Army in WW II, he and Amy settled on the family farm on Blackwelder Road in Iredell County, where they worked together in the beef cattle business. Amy was preceded in death by Willard in 1985. She also survived her four siblings, Richard Boyd Lackey, Haskell Pender Lackey, Treva Lackey Kunkle, and Samuel Wilson Lackey. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Dobson (Ben) and her son, Walter Holland (Edie). She is also survived by three grandchildren, William Holland (Nelson), Thomas Holland (Josette) and Anna Holland. There are four great grandchildren, Andrew, Jack, Sophia, and Amy Holland. In addition to her legacy as a great wife and mother, Amy is remembered by her commitment to service. After Willard's death, Amy dedicated her energy to volunteer work. She was named a lifetime member of the women of Forest Park Presbyterian Church. At Forest Park, she served as Deacon and Elder, and spent many hours in congregational care visiting the sick and shut-ins. She was a charter member of the Sarah Rebekah Lodge where she was Noble Grand and also held many state offices. She served as a Girl Scout leader, Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. In an article in the Statesville Record & Landmark in March 1991 which featured her community service, she concluded the interview with "Whenever a neighbor needs something or I can help a shut-in, I will. I love my volunteer jobs-all of them and plan to continue them until I can no longer do so."
