Gerald Grant

Henry Gerald Grant, 86, of Statesville, passed away Sunday, February 17, 2013 at the Gordon Hospice House. He was born February 14, 1927 in Alexander County and was the son of the late John Everett Grant and Irene Waugh Grant.

Mr. Grant was a graduate of Stony Point High School and served in the US Navy during WWII. On July 5, 1947 he married Nellie Dagenhart Grant, who survives.  Mr. Grant was worked as Director of Maintenance for Davis Hospital and later worked for Hunt Mfg.

He was a charter member of Grace Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He was a past master of Mt. Moriah Lodge #690 where he was a certified lecturer, a member of the Scottish Rite and also a Shriner.

Gerald found his mission from the teaching of Jesus in Matthew 25:40 when He said:           “Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.”

Gerald loved his fellow man and volunteered his talents to individuals, family and friends as well as the larger groups he served.  None did he love more than 5th Street Ministries.  He received many honors, awards and achievements but his true purpose was to serve his fellow man.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a brother, Ballard W. Grant, a sister, Catherine G. Sherrill and a nephew, David W. Grant.

Along with his wife, he is survived by a son, Gerald V. Grant (Gail), of Statesville, two daughters, Phyllis G. Munson (John), of Mooresville and Jean G. Gibson (Greg), of Boonville, NC. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, John E. Grant, Matthew I. Grant, Robert C. Maxey, Jr., Rachel Maxey Homesley, Rebecca Christa Maxey, Grant E. Gibson, Amy Johnson and Brad Gibson, four great-grandchildren, Isabella D. Grant, Wyatt C. Grant, Sawyer S. Grant and Nellie June Greer. He is further survived by a sister, Faye G. Sherrill, of Stony Point and sister-in-law, Helen M. Grant, of Columbia, SC.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, February 21, 2013 at Grace Baptist Church with Rev. Gary West and Rev. David Comer officiating. Burial will follow in the Marvin United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alexander County with full military honors provided by VFW Post 10, 000 of Hiddenite and VFW Post 5456 of Taylorsville. Pallbearers will be Grandsons, John Grant, Matt Grant, Rob Maxey, Grant Gibson, Keith Sherrill and Randy Sherrill. Honorary pallbearers are Steve Sherrill, Michael Sherrill and Aaron Moore. The family will visit with friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Nicholson Funeral Home.

    So sorry to hear of Gerald’s passing. What a wonderful man who always gave above and beyond to everything and everyone. The years he was my work supervisor at Davis Hospital were great. It was an honor to work for him. He was a good friend also. So glad our lives crossed. He was a blessing to all. Unfortunately, I am out of town and unable to attend his service.
