Betty Corbett

Betty Fox Corbett peacefully departed this world Wednesday at the Gordon Hospice House.  Mrs. Corbett was born May 26, 1926 to the late Cloyd and Louise Fox.

Betty had a love for life and never met a stranger.  She was a common sight at the farmer’s market, yard sales, and wherever people gathered.

Her greatest love was for her family. She leaves behind three children, Susan Dawson of Newnan, Georgia; Nancy Fields (Harold) and Jeff Corbett, both of Statesville; grandchildren Matthew and William Corbett, and Alex Fields, all of Statesville.

Mrs. Corbett was also predeceased by a son, Mike Corbett, and husband Bill.

Her career was varied, and always centered on helping others. She held a Masters in Social Work, having worked at the local Department of Social Services and I-Care.

In the 1980’s, she was in retail sales at JC Penney, where her customers became her friends.

A service of remembrance is Saturday at 11am at First Baptist Church on Davie Avenue, with Dr. Jack Causey presiding. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends in the Adams Hall.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers or other gifts of kindness, donations be made to the Iredell County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1617 Statesville, NC 28687, or the Iredell Christian Ministries, 322 East Front Street Statesville 28677.

Today I learned about miss betty’s passing. I had lost touch with her after I moved back to virginia. When I moved to statesville, I worked with her in the shoe department. She was a catbird and we usually got into trouble but we had so much fun. What a loving person both of people and of pets. The biggest heart and kindest soul. She was one of the first to hold our son, casey..I will continue to think of her with fond memories.

Dear Jeff, Nancy and Susan – So sorry about your mom. I was not able to be at the funeral but I know there was a lot of rejoicing as she would want it to be that way. She was her own person and I very much admired her for that. I will miss seeing her. Love,
    Pat Moore

    Nancy, Jeff and Susan,
So sorry to hear about your mother. I have so many good memories of her servant’s heart and kindness in such a caring spirit for everyone and everything. I was reading about Hugh West and saw her name. I graduated from Nursing School with Kathy.
She came to my mind last week and now I now I know why. Nancy I did not know you have a son. I suppose all the grandchildren are getting grown. I have recently had open heart surgery but hope to get to Hugh’s service today. All of your family have been in my heart and prayers since I have seen you last and will remain there forever.
Love to all in Jesus Christ,
    Elizabeth

    To the family:
I worked with your mother at J.C Penney’s and so appreciated her! It is true that she never met a stranger whether feline, canine, or human. One night in January, a very cold night, we were “rescuing” this small, cold kitten from under a car at Belks. I also have memory of her having a cat, Lydia (I think) that would only eat a certain kind of cat food and your mother was knocking on the gro. store door on one Thansgiving eve, trying to get cat food for Lydia!
This is how I remember your mother, caring and kind to all!! A very special person, one that will certainly be missed by all.

My prayers are with each of you.

    Dear Corbett family,
What a wonderful person your mother was. She was a joy to be around and had such a quick wit about her.
May God be with you during this difficult time.

My Mother and I would like to send our sympathy to Susan and Jeff and Nancy for the loss of their mother Betty. Betty and Bill were friends of my mother and father. Betty was a special friend to my mother. She was a lover of animals and a friend to all she met. She and my mother were also co-workers at J.C Penny’s. My mother has special memories of Betty. Your family is in our thought’s and prayers. Sincerely, John & Ruth Bondurant
